Coal River (Mulubinba) Cultural Landscape

National Trust news: the National Trust is strongly supporting the nomination by the Coal Working Party, University of Newcastle of ‘The Coal River (Mulubinba) Cultural Landscape for listing on the National Heritage List. This landscape is situated at the southern entrance to the Port of Newcastle and includes landmarks such as Nobbys Head, Macquarie Pier, Colliers Point/Signal Hill and Flagstaff Hill, Fort Scratchley, the convict lumber yard and the adjoining foreshore. The site is the birthplace of Australia’s coal mining industry and the site of the discovery of coal and the first modern coal mining in the Southern Hemisphere.
