From the Maitland Mercury report:
Along with the thousands of Australian soldiers prepared to put their lives on the line in WWI, 75 Hunter women volunteered to care for the wounded. With them were at least 19 nurses from Maitland, East Maitland, Paterson, Kurri Kurri and Cessnock. In her book Sisters of the Valley, Hunter historian Christina Bramble tells the experiences of the nurses.
