Ancestry.com.au has published Australian prisoner of war records online. During World War II, a total of 8,622 Australian servicemen ended up prisoners of war (POW) in Europe, with a select few regarded as so difficult for their captors that they ended up in the top security Colditz prison. Now all their records have gone online, along with the records of all other British and Commonwealth POW held in German camps in Europe.
Brad Argent, partnership development manager at the on-line ancestry research firm ancestry.com.au, said much of this information had never been available before.
"Their release is particularly significant given that so few records from this time are available for people researching their family's military history." SBS World News.
